Guide to Gasket Materials for Bathroom Drainage:

------Why Silicone Stands Out?

In bathroom systems, showerheads, bathtub drains, and floor drains (for odor prevention) all depend on a small part: the gasket. When gaskets age and harden, their sealing ability drops sharply, causing water to leak through gaps and disrupting drainage. While bathroom products like bathtub drains aren’t the core of building waterproofing, faulty gaskets still create big headaches.Notably, most North American homes have wooden structures, where water leakage is more damaging: it ruins floors, molds walls or carpets, and speeds up termite growth in damp conditions. Termites chew on wooden parts, threatening the home’s safety long-term. Many common leaks (from showerheads, bathtub drains, floor drains) come from aged, failed gaskets.

With 20 years in bathroom accessory production and 15 in foreign trade, we know gasket materials matter. We tested PVC, LDPE, TPE for drainage product gaskets, and finally used silicone for all our seals. After formula tweaks and scenario adaptations, we solved leaks and gained overseas trust. Many peers face complaints from wrong material choices, so we’ve made this guide (using bathtub drains as an example) to help choose gaskets for drainage products. From pain points to material differences: Why silicone gaskets?Combining engineering research, material tests, and customer feedback, the four main gasket materials vary greatly in performance. Silicone is best for environmental friendliness, durability, and scenario adaptability — that’s why we use it for all products.

Silicone Gaskets: Top Choice for Drainage

All our drainage products (showerheads, bathtub drains, floor drains) use silicone gaskets. Their advantages — “no odor, anti-aging, long-lasting seal” — are market-proven. Tests show high-quality silicone gaskets resist extreme temps (-40℃~230℃). They don’t age or crack easily under hot water soaking or temperature shocks, stay elastic long-term, lower leak risks, and reduce damage to North American homes.

PVC Gaskets: Outdated “Minefield”

PVC gaskets contain plasticizers (smelly, hard to pass eco-certifications). Drainage products (e.g., bathtub drains) with PVC gaskets age and harden in just 6 months, losing seal and leaking. Leaks from this cost a lot to fix and prevent termites in North American homes — we’ve fully phased out PVC gaskets.

LDPE Gaskets: Unfit for Needs

LDPE is odorless and cold-resistant but has poor elasticity (leaks if the seal surface is uneven) and wears easily. It only works for low-seal-demand parts, can’t meet North American market needs, and isn’t in our product line.

TPE Gaskets: High Risk

TPE has rubber-like elasticity but cracks in 2 months at high temps and fails after 3 months of frequent friction — poor anti-aging and wear resistance. North America’s summer heat speeds up its aging, causing leaks, so we don’t use it.

Ways to Spot Quality Silicone Gaskets & Avoid Low-Quality Ones--- Buyers are easily tricked by “fake silicone gaskets”

Smell: Quality silicone has a faint material scent (no irritation); low-quality ones (e.g., PVC) have a strong chemical smell.

Touch: Quality silicone is soft and tough (rebounds instantly when pressed, no deformation when pulled); PVC is soft when new but hardens over time, TPE rebounds slowly, and LDPE is hard and inelastic.

Appearance: Quality silicone gaskets have a smooth, flawless surface; PVC gaskets often have “ejector pin holes” (from manufacturing) — a hidden leak risk.

Tip: Choose Suppliers Specializing in Silicone Gaskets

For foreign trade procurement, don’t chase low prices — the right material and supplier are key. Some customers once had leaks from PVC/TPE gasket products, spending heavily on repairs and termite prevention. After switching to our silicone gasket products, they had no more issues. Prioritize suppliers that use silicone for all products and have testing experience: they know formula optimization and customization (e.g., adjusting gasket hardness/size) and proactively provide certifications and test data. We also send samples regularly and share cases to help customers choose, achieving win-win results.
